Sustainability

At the National Data Centre Academy (NDCA), sustainability is at the core of our mission. We don’t just do this with our Green IT Fundamentals training either, we also bring it into our everyday business operations in a big way. From reducing energy consumption in data centres to making environmentally conscious choices in daily operations, we are dedicated to minimising IT’s impact on the environment.

Our Sustainable Practices

We’re committed to reusing office furniture and fit-out materials, rather than purchasing new items. By sourcing from social media platforms, auctions, and second-hand suppliers (especially locally!) we support local businesses and reduce landfill waste.

  • We recycle and reuse items wherever possible.
  • Items from the building have been repurposed or sourced from UK manufacturers and sustainable suppliers.

We prioritise sourcing consumables from local suppliers to reduce our environmental impact. This includes both everyday items and food:

  • We are transitioning to eco-friendly cleaning products from sustainable suppliers.
  • Our food suppliers are chosen based on their environmental practices, with a focus on local, seasonal products.
  • Recycling opportunities will be available throughout the site to reduce waste.

We choose local service providers to reduce transport emissions and ensure they share our commitment to sustainability.

  • For our technical labs and sandboxes, we prioritise reusing or recycling hardware from data centre refits or closures.
  • We actively select suppliers who are committed to reducing their environmental footprint.

Transportation is another area where we work to minimise our impact:

  • We use public transport wherever possible.
  • When cars are necessary, we opt for electric vehicles powered by solar energy. We’re working to install on-site electric vehicle chargers for visitors.

Data centres are energy-intensive, but we are committed to using power responsibly and sustainably:

  • We’ve chosen energy providers with strong environmental credentials.
  • We are working towards installing a solar array and battery system to supplement our energy use and further reduce our environmental impact.

Our website has been developed and hosted with sustainability in mind:

  • The site is hosted using liquid-cooled technology on sustainably built servers, powered by green energy sources.
